The intention of Croatia to joint European Union (EU) is to some extents blocked by Slovenia, who is currently a member of EU. The main reason for this is because Croatia has pending boundaries to settle with Slovenia. Border does really matter.
Slovenia insists that the two neighbours should settle their land and maritime boundaries first before Croatia’s proposal to join EU can be considered. In addition, Slovenia preferred the mediation offered by the EU Commission to resolve the dispute. However, Croatia preferred to bring the case before the International Court of Justice, for some reasons.
After a long disagreement, Croatia finally accepted the mediation proposal. The former Finnish president, Martti Ahtisaari, will be the mediator for the dispute. Ahtisaari was well-known with his ability in bringing peaceful solution for serious conflict around the globe. His success in mediating parties to achieve good solutions was the reason for him to be awarder Nobel Peace Prize last year.
