Today, 28 October 2008, the Indonesian House of Representative passed the Law of National Territory in Jakarta. The proposal has been in the discussion for quiet a while and was finally passed today. This new law is important for Indonesia since this is the first legal document concerning national territory. The law, in general, covers the extent of the Indonesian territory and specifies its outer limits. It will be interesting to see how the law defines the limits, especially those requiring agreement with other neighbouring States. One question, for example is how the law deals with the pending maritime boundaries between Indonesia and Timor Leste, for example.
Another important issue is that the law requires the establishment of border management board in local level and central government level. This is to enhance and monitor the development in the border area, making sure that people residing in the border area is benefited by the national development.
Document of the law is downloadable from here.
